Shenmue Empty Shenmue

Post by jameswalker85 Sun May 31, 2009 4:04 pm

Anybody here play Shenmue on the Dreamcast, or Shenmue II on DC or Xbox?

If so, what did you think? And do you agree with me that there should be another?

If you are not familiar with the series, Shenmue is an action game set in Yokosuka, Japan in 1986-87. The story revolves around 18 year old Ryo Hazuki, who returns home one day to witness his fathers murder. The killer, Lan Di, takes a stone disc called the 'Dragon Mirror'. Soon after, Ryo starts to investigate his fathers death. By the end of the game, he finds out that Lan Di is in Hong Kong, and so he sets off on a cargo ship.

Shenmue II starts as Ryo steps off the ship in Hong Kong, and continues his investigation. He eventually tracks down Lan Di, who gets away, but not before losing the Dragon Mirror.

Unfortunately, that's about it. The story is unfinished. There was going to be a Shenue MMO, but this was cancelled. There are petitions online, and the original creator has insisted that the story will be finished, but there has been nothing as of yet.

I don't know why I'm posting all this. I was just killing time waiting for my wife to get out of the bath. Which she is. So I'm off.

Nice way to kill time Laughing

All I know is that I hate unfinished stories, and I hate them when they do finish as well (want more)

As for the game, never heard of it. Was only released in Yokosuka, Japan you say? So I assume there's no English version?

Sounds like a great series, hope it gets completed someday.

Sorry. I typed 'let in Yokosuka', I meant 'set in Yokosuka'. Shenmue was released worldwide on the Dreamcast. Shenmue II was released in Japan/Europe, but was cancelled for a US release. It was eventually released in America on the Xbox.

Shenmue let you choose between English or Japanese with subs. DC Shenmue II had Japanese with subs. Xbox Shenmue II had the same options as #1.

Sounds like you know all about it Smile Did you seriously just write all that off the top of your head? Shocked

Might have to but the American Xbox version. I assume Xboxes don't have region coding or anything to stop me from playing it, right? Have never had to worry about it before.

Shenmue II was released in Europe as well, whcih is PAL. So I think you should be able to get a hold of it somewhere. Wikipedia doesn't mention AU, so I dunno.

If you can get Shenmue II, you get a bonus DVD which contains all the cutscenes from Shenmue, so you at least get some backstory.

And yes, I did type it from memory. I could type the entire story from memory, I love those games!
